Difference between HPLC and UPLC

Both high-performance liquid chromatography and ultra performance liquid chromatography are the separation techniques used for separate different components found in the complex mixture. UPLC works on high pressures and particle size of columns are less, Whereas, HPLC works under low pressure, hence UPLC offers better detection and separation, shorter run times, and consumption of less solvent.

The main difference between HPLC and UPLC is that UPLC has less time consuming, less solvent consumption and better detection and separation in the detector, due to the UPLC work on about max 15000 psi pressure, whereas HPLC works on max 500-6000 psi pressure. The particle size of the column less than 2um can be used in UPLC, which is contrary to 5um particle size, which is specific to HPLC. Apart from this, the one more difference between HPLC and UPLC is they can analyze the sample of UPLC very quickly, which is about 3-10 minutes; Whereas HPLC can take about 10-20 minutes to separate the analytes.
