Closed cup test

The closed cup test is similar to the open cup test, but the liquid is heated in a closed cup with a lid. This method is used for substances that vaporize quickly and for liquids that are sensitive to oxygen.

The main disadvantage of the closed cup test is that it can't be used for flammable solids.

Guided probe test

The guided probe test is used for liquids with a high flash point, such as diesel fuel. In this test, a needle is inserted into the liquid and the temperature is raised until the vapors ignite.

The main disadvantage of the guided probe test is that it can be dangerous if the vapors ignite inside the cup, so it's important to use a well-ventilated area and to have a fire extinguisher on hand.

Which method should you use?

The type of flash point test you should use depends on the properties of the liquid you're testing as well as the application. For most liquids, the open cup test is the best option. However, for liquids that vaporize quickly or are sensitive to oxygen, the closed cup test is a better choice. And for liquids with a high flash point, the guided probe test is the best option.
