✅ Definition

The Laboratory Stand or also called universal foot or laboratory support, is one of the laboratory instruments, which is used to give support by means of clamps to other materials such as: Burettes, funnels, thermometers, among others. This is one of the most used instruments in the laboratory. In Figure 1. such support can be noted:

🌡 Who invented it?

The German chemist Karl Friedrich Mohr, who served as a Professor of Pharmacy in Bonn, contributed to science in volumetric analysis, especially in the clinical toxicology of volumetric analysis methods. He elaborated or improved several of the laboratory materials such as the burette, the clamp, the Laboratory Stand, the rack, among others.  On the other hand, the unequal arm balance, which is used to determine the density of a liquid, is also called the Mohr-Westphal balance. Additionally, I study the winemaking process and also the preparation of various compounds.

👉 What is it for?

This instrument is used as a support to hold other instruments for Laboratory use such as: Burettes, funnels, thermometers, among others. In itself, it ensures that these remain stable, so that the corresponding laboratory analyzes can be performed.

What is a Laboratory Stand?

A laboratory stand, also known as a lab stand, is a piece of equipment that is used to hold and support other laboratory equipment such as burettes, beakers, flasks, and other scientific instruments. It is typically made of metal or plastic and consists of a vertical rod, a base, and various clamps and holders.

✅ Types of Universal Bracket

It can be classified by the type of base it presents as well as the structure to which it is supported to fulfill its functions.

The types of universal bracket are described below:

Rectangular universal bracket

This is the most common type that can be noticed in most laboratories, since its shape is ideal to support the weight of the instruments that are placed on it. Usually this type of base is made of iron or other metal.

Universal square bracket

This stand is similar to the previous one, only it has a square base instead of rectangular, thus being a little more unstable than the previous one.

Universal triangular bracket

This form is rare to find in laboratories, since it is very unstable, so it is more practical for light instruments that are less delicate in their manipulation.

Universal wall mount

This type of support is attached to a wall, which makes it more stable and reliable for use, since it does not move because it is practically glued to the wall.

Universal bracket with support

The aforementioned support is similar to the previous one, only it is not attached directly to the wall, but to another supporting element of the laboratory.

Universal bracket without bracket

Its structure is independent, it does not need any support to do its function, usually it has a rectangular base.

In summary, depending on the use that is needed at the moment, any of the types of Laboratory Stand described would be appropriate, so it is necessary to evaluate what kind of analysis is required to choose the type of Laboratory Stand suitable for that purpose.

📌 Characteristic

Here are the main features presented by the universal bracket:

It is universal

This instrument is structured in itself to support any laboratory instrument that is owned, according to its size and weight.

Made of metal elements

This helps it to have more weight, which helps the universal stand to support several laboratory instruments and thus be able to hold them.

It is helped with other instruments to fulfill its function

This being the use of the laboratory clamp, with which it is attached to the support in order to hold the instruments that will be used for it.

👉 Parts of the universal bracket

The universal bracket is made up of the following parts:

Horizontal base or foot

This instrument has a base made of metal (usually iron), which is capable of holding the material and also the others to be used in the aforementioned support.

Vertical cylindrical rod

It is inserted into the base of the support on one side, it is made of metal, the purpose of which is to maintain the balance between the support and the materials that the support must hold by means of the clamps.

📌 Commonly used tweezers

Tweezers are secondary laboratory materials that are used specifically to hold objects, materials, instruments, among others. There are tweezers that are manual to use, as well as others that are supported on a base, such as the “Laboratory Stand”.

The metal clamp is one of the most frequent, since it has a structure similar to pliers or hands, which serve to hold glass materials such as jars, connections, funnels, among others. In the following figure you can see this clamp:

Figure 2. Metal clamp

Apart from this clamp, there is the laboratory nut, which is used to support other materials such as rings, claws or clamps, which also have the function of holding the instruments to be used in laboratory analysis. In the following figure you can see the laboratory nut:

laboratory nut for Laboratory Stand

Figure 3. Laboratory nut

From Figure 3. It can be noticed that the laboratory nut has two holes where a screw is located in each of them. One of the holes is used to adjust the screw to the Laboratory Stand, and the other hole is used to adjust the screw to the part that will be used to hold the material to be used in the analysis of corresponding.

✅ Methodology of use

The use of the Laboratory Stand is very simple, since initially the clamp must be attached to the support, this is achieved by placing the lower part (with the screw) to the vertical cylindrical rod of the support. Then the clamp screw is adjusted to the rod so that the clamp is completely firm to the required position.

Then, you have to unadjust the screw that has the clamp to the upper part (where you have the hand, in Figure 2 this represents the red part) to place the material to be held, then the screw is adjusted again and it is verified that it has been well adjusted so that the fall of the material is avoided.

Once this is done, the corresponding analysis is performed, and at the end of this the material has to be removed from the support. To do this, the screw on the upper part of the clamp is removed, where it is removed. The screw on the lower part of the clamp is disengaged to remove it from the bracket. And that's how Laboratory Stand is used.

Uses of a Laboratory Stand

A laboratory stand has numerous uses in a laboratory setting. Here are some of the most common uses:

Support for Equipment

A laboratory stand is used to support laboratory equipment such as burettes, flasks, beakers, and other instruments. The vertical rod and base provide a stable support for the equipment, allowing scientists to conduct experiments without worrying about the equipment falling or tipping over.

Precise Measurements

In many experiments, precise measurements are crucial. A laboratory stand can be used to hold instruments such as pipettes and burettes in place while taking measurements. This helps to ensure that the measurements are accurate and consistent.

Temperature Control

Some experiments require precise temperature control. A laboratory stand can be used to hold a heating mantle or a hot plate, allowing scientists to control the temperature of the experiment.

Types of Laboratory Stands

There are several types of laboratory stands available, each designed for specific uses. Here are some of the most common types of laboratory stands:

Single Rod Stand

A single rod stand is a simple laboratory stand that consists of a single vertical rod and a base. It is used to hold small laboratory equipment such as burettes, pipettes, and small flasks.

Double Rod Stand

A double rod stand consists of two vertical rods and a base. It is used to hold larger and heavier laboratory equipment such as large flasks and beakers.

Tripod Stand

A tripod stand is a laboratory stand with three legs and a vertical rod. It is typically used to support larger equipment such as distillation apparatus and condensers.

How to Choose a Laboratory Stand

Choosing the right laboratory stand depends on the type of equipment you need to support and the size of the laboratory. Here are some factors to consider when choosing a laboratory stand:

Size and Stability

The laboratory stand should be stable and sturdy enough to support the equipment without tipping over. The size of the stand should also be appropriate for the size of the laboratory.

Material

Laboratory stands are typically made of metal or plastic. Metal stands are more durable and long-lasting, while plastic stands are lighter and more affordable.

Versatility

Choose a laboratory stand that can accommodate a variety of laboratory equipment. This will allow you to use the stand for multiple experiments and save money in the long run.

👉 Importance

The universal stand is a very helpful instrument, as it serves as support in those procedures that require the use of a large amount of laboratory materials. In addition, it ensures a stable position of the material(s) to be supported for a certain time, which is of great help to perform other activities while it performs its function.

So it can be said in conclusion, that the Laboratory Stand allows time savings, as well as provides security and confidence in conducting laboratory tests and guarantees good results in these. That is why it is worth having one for the performance of analyzes that require it.
